Want To Stay Healthy? – Keep Your Muscles Strong

We tend to think about our muscles as something a bodybuilder has and is just about looks. Most of us do not understand that the health and state of our muscular system is important for our overall health as well and its condition and strength is something we need to look after if we wish to live to live a long and healthy life.

There is an important link between our muscles and our immune system and if we want to have a strong immune system we need strong healthy muscles as well. If muscles are allowed to grow weak with disuse the immune system also loses its ability to create the special cells you need to fight off disease and illness.

A strong immune system is essential for continuing good health – and good health does mean one free from disease. Think of your immune system like an impenetrable army protecting you from invading forces. However if it is not continually fortified it will slowly weaken and become susceptible to foreign invaders.

The relationship between the muscular system and the immune system is important as the amino acid glutamine is a necessary fuel source for many of the disease fighting cells. Muscle tissue is where it is stored so the more muscle tissue you have the more abundant the supply is and the stronger and healthier the immune system is.

Muscle tissue is also the storage site for protein that produces new antibodies and white blood cells that fight infection as well as finding and destroying cancer cells. The more toned muscle tissue means an essential reserve that can be called upon to fight and recover from illness.

Natural killer cells are white blood cells that play a critical role against infections and also cancer cells. These healthy warriors are directly proportional to the amount of muscle tissue and this is where exercise especially muscle-building exercise comes into its own. It can boost the number of the cells and also improve their ability to kill invading cells by 50 to 200 percent.

This is why strength training exercise is very important as you get older when you lose muscle tissue with each passing year if you do not do enough muscle building and maintaining activity. Just 2-3 sessions each week is all it takes to hold on to your precious muscle tissue.

Our modern day lives no longer have enough activity that works the muscles intensely to keep our immune systems as well as our general health in good condition. We may like to believe that this is not important but if you do not give your muscles enough ‘work’ they will shrink, weaken and lose the ability to fight disease.

The only way to keep those muscles strong and healthy throughout your life is to start your strength training program and never stop. This will lessen your risk of ever falling prey to some terrible life threatening disease and may well save your life.
